Lavaman 2008
Blake participated in the lavaman aquathon this month. He signed up for the clinics to prepare for race day since he had never done anything like it before. When we arrived this morning, there were a lot of kids who had signed up just that day. I could see Blake was nervous about the race. The swim portion was first and Blake stayed toward the back.( His age group division was 11 to 14) Several older boys were done very quickly and others worked at a pretty slow pace. After they left the water area they had to go to the transitioning area to wash off their feet, slip on socks and shoes, and drink something all within 2 minutes. Next it was on to the running....4 laps around the lagoon(1mile) on sand and asphalt. Blake really pushed it here because the running aspect for him was the easiest. After Blake crossed the finish line we went to the snack station and waited for the awards ceremony. When they announced the 11 and 12 yr. olds, Blakes name was called for the third place winner. WE were so excited for him. What a great ending to the race!
Spring Break 2008
As part of our annual travels, we visit the outer islands for spring break each year. This year we went to Kaui. It is the most beautiful of all the Islands we have been to. We had the best week there. We jammed one to two activities into our days because we didn't know if we'd get the chance to come back. The first two days were spent with our good friends the Whipples from Phoenix. The big boys went zip lining while Liz and I and the younger kids went to Poipu beach and their condos pool. We enjoyed going to the beach with them, snorkeling, BBQ'ing,& going to dinner.When they came to our condo Oke had them sample native sugar cane(raw) and Guava that was growing nearby.Thanks for the fun Whipple Ohana!
As for our family, we really enjoyed the quality time spent together. Oke was in heaven that Lapperts Ice Cream was close to the condo. The boys loved all of the activities...one scarey highlight involved snorkeling at Hanalei Bay. Oke , Blake and Tanner had gone out pretty far and I was getting anxious about what might be lurking out there. Another group came in and the lady started talking to me about how a 5ft. Black -tipped reef shark had followed my families group for about 15 min. and then it started getting close to them. Thankfully Oke saw it and rapidly brought our group in. Could you imagine anything worse than a Shark bite on vacation. AAAaahhhhh! I was freaking out.You know us moms . Needless to say we'll be staying closer from here on out. All in all it was one of the best vacations the Aholelei family has gone on.
